In 1980, Exeter Leukaemia Fund (ELF) was the vision of Dr Miles Joyner, Consultant Haematologist at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital in Exeter, who wanted to improve the lives of all patients with blood conditions by providing improved facilities, better equipment and funding research. ELF became a registered charity in 1987 and today the vision continues with ELF being the leading patient-led support organisation for families affected by blood cancers and blood disorders in the South West.
ELF believes every family affected by blood cancers and blood disorders across the South West should receive compassionate, tailored support from initial diagnosis and throughout treatment to help lighten the load and supporting each patient's journey.
One of ELF's greatest achievements has been the funding and building of the Haematology Centre at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital which opened in 2003 as a centre of excellence providing treatment and medical care in a warm and comforting environment.
