Yarty ward Patient & Nurse join forces in epic cycling challenge

When Mark Shaw was receiving treatment for blood cancer on Yarty ward in 2023, he shared stories of his love of cycling with Nicki, one of the haematology nurses. Nicki, a keen triathlete, promised Mark that once he was well enough, they would undertake a cycling challenge together to celebrate his recovery. Fast forward to 2025 and that promise is about to become a reality!

Mark was diagnosed with MDS (Myelodysplastic syndrome) in July 2023. His treatment and subsequent recovery began on Yarty Ward with two rounds of gruelling chemotherapy and two lengthy hospital stays. Mark recalls: "During this time, I received fabulous care and support from ELF staff and volunteers. I heard of many fundraising stories undertaken by staff on Yarty Ward and was determined to undertake my own, after my treatment ended"

A stem cell transplant and a further period in hospital followed, this time at Derriford Hospital in Plymouth, where Mark once again received wonderful care. After being discharged in February 2024, Mark then began a lengthy recovery period at home, monitored regularly by clinicians from Birch Ward, a process which remains ongoing to this day.

2025 finds Mark back on his beloved bike and training hard. Mark and Nicki have entered the 'Moor to Sea' Sportive Challenge - a 64 mile/103km one day endurance cycling event taking in the challenging hills of Dartmoor and the stunning sea views of the Devon coastline. Mark's brother John makes up the team, with the trio tackling this epic challenge on 10th May.

"During my journey I have met many blood cancer patients, both young and old, and I have been struck by their determination to fight this illness. Supporting ELF will help provide those who are suffering with the help they need to fight this disease! Please help ELF to help in this fight." - Mark, haematology patient

"I will be cycling every mile thinking of patients whom I have treated and unfortunately lost, and ones who I treat and happily still see. Their journey is as tough as mine will be!" - Nicki, Chemotherapty Nurse

Please join us in wishing Mark, Nicki and John much luck with their challenge. We will keep you updated on our social media pages with their progress and report back once the Moor to Sea has been completed.
